The Trevithick Day Association
The Camborne Trevithick Day Committee was formed in 1983. The first Trevithick Day was held in 1984. There is a written constitution for the “Trevithick Day Association”.
The committee consists of volunteer members of the community. Several committee members have their own businesses so bring good administrative, financial and planning skills to the committee. Each section, i.e. treasurer, secretary, steam, vintage vehicles, entertainments, street stalls, exhibitions, programme editing, schools, processional dances etc. is looked after by a committee member with relevant skills and experience in that field.
The aim of the committee is to provide a festival of free entertainment to celebrate Camborne’s industrial heritage and links with Richard Trevithick, Father of the locomotive.
Benefits
Camborne lies within an area of low wages and above national rate of unemployment, and is statistically recognised as being a deprived area with an image of a declining industrial base.
Amongst many other things the focus of a celebration like Trevithick Day helps to
-
raise civic pride
-
bring the community together
-
show that the town is in the midst of regeneration and that Camborne does have something to offer
-
give a potential platform for all sectors of the local community to participate - for example with displays, entertainment, street stalls etc
-
raise an opportunity for voluntary groups, charities and other such organisations to raise money for their funds through having a street stall or offering refreshments
-
help local small businesses to publicise themselves through participation or through advertising in the printed programme
-
educate about the rich heritage of the area (prior to Trevithick Day Richard Trevithick was often left out of the history books - he isn’t now!)
-
build better relationships between community groups, both inside and outside of the area
-
give opportunity for members of the community to experience events within the day that they would otherwise be deprived of because of the county’s insular location
-
offer a day of family enjoyment in an area where there is statistically proven disadvantage
